End of an Era

The South African Post Office is slowing down and may be closing down soon. Now in business rescue, post is becoming more unpredictable and unreliable. We have just received our 2022 Christmas card from friends in the UK!

In the years past, the post office was taken for granted – lick an envelope, close it, slap on a stamp, put it in the mail and a few days later, it arrived at the address you directed. The post office was very efficient. To use the phrase “it’s in the post”, as an excuse, had no creditability.
When I was at university I remember writing aerogrammes – air mail letters where you wrote on the actual envelope and folded it carefully together – nothing was allowed to be placed on the inside. But it was the cheapest way to communicate overseas. There was no Internet, no fax, and calls had to be booked with an operator at a high cost. Or you could send a telex or telegram where charges were per alpha numeric letter!

As a student at UCT in the early 80’s, my girlfriend, a BSc nursing student, used to send a slab of Cadbury’s chocolate with a short note, “I love you”, in the post. Admittedly I only received a few, but I believe that what she sent, is what I got. Nothing was pilfered. That post certainly put a smile on my face!
